The Citadel of Blaye, Unesco World Heritage Site
The Citadel of Blaye is part of Vauban’s defence system, the only one of its kind in France designed to control the Gironde estuary and protect the city of Bordeaux . Today, the old barracks of this walled city shelter craftsmen and artists, restaurants... Guided tours of the Citadel and the undergrounds are available in English or if you prefer to visit the fortress by yourself, there are historic signs in English along the walk.
To explore The Gironde, the largest estuary in Europe, You can enjoy either boat sailing or boat trips from Blaye and choose between having lunch, dinner or a picnic on the different islands or on board.
Every day, all year round. A ferry boat crosses the Gironde in 20 mn. Several crossings from bank to bank get vehicles and passengers from Blaye to the heart of the Medoc prestigious wine region and return. From there, the endless sandy beaches of the Atlantic coast and their famous surf spots are a 40 mn drive.
